Airlink is a privately-owned, full-service regional airline based at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Founded in 1992 by Rodger Foster and Barrie Webb, the carrier spent 23 years operating as South African Airlink under a franchise agreement with South African Airways before rebranding as a fully independent airline in 2020. By January 2021 Airlink was already the second-largest airline in Africa by number of flights operated and the third-largest by seats — a remarkable rise from a regional commuter operation to a continent-wide network airline.
In August 2024, Qatar Airways acquired a 25% strategic shareholding in Airlink airlines — the maximum foreign ownership permitted under South African law. The partnership unlocks deeper interline agreements with one of the world's leading global carriers and gives passengers on SA Airlink flights smoother through-fare pricing and baggage handling when connecting onward to international long-haul services.
Fly Airlink and you fly with the strongest on-time performance record in the South African market. Recent monthly performance has averaged 85–86% on-time, which puts Airlink airlines well ahead of the regional average. That reliability matters when you are flying into smaller airports with fewer alternative options — Skukuza, Hoedspruit, St. Helena, or Mthatha — where a missed connection often means a 24-hour delay.
Travelwings keeps Airlink bookings to the smallest possible number of clicks while still showing you live availability across every route. The flow is built for South African travellers, with ZAR pricing and no currency surprises at checkout.
Airlink flights operate to a wider regional network than any other South African carrier. The route list below is grouped by hub for easy reference.
Airlink airlines uses a Sunbird fare structure — every fare class is named after a different sunbird species, and the feature set rises with the tier. Knowing the difference will save both money and frustration.
The cheapest option. Non-refundable, with restrictive change rules. Free seat selection is included on domestic flights, and the standard 20 kg checked bag plus 7 kg cabin bag still applies. Best when your dates are fixed.
The middle tier. Date and time changes are permitted for a fee, baggage allowance is the same, and seat selection is included.
The most flexible Economy fare. Free changes, refundable in most cases, and the most generous baggage allowance. Closer to Business behaviour than to a budget Economy ticket.
Available exclusively on Embraer E-Jet aircraft on routes like Johannesburg-Cape Town and Cape Town-Harare. Wider 1-1 or 2-2 seating, priority check-in, lounge access at select airports, upgraded meal service, and a more generous checked luggage allowance.
Airlink offers online and airport check-in at every domestic airport it serves. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure on most routes and is the fastest way to skip airport queues during peak hours at OR Tambo or Cape Town.
Airlink airlines runs a full-service onboard product on every flight, regardless of length. There is no in-flight entertainment system or Wi-Fi, but the airline does serve a complimentary meal or snack box on every sector — a small but increasingly rare touch in the regional market.
Travelwings has been operating in the global travel market for more than 25 years, with a dedicated South African office and a local support number you can actually reach during business hours. We are not a comparison engine — we issue your Airlink ticket and own the relationship until you have flown.
