Diriyah

The first Saudi capital and the former home to the royal Saudi family is the former largest city of the Arabian peninsula. The city lies on the northwestern outskirts of the country and was the capital city of the then known region of Al-Yamamah. However, during the course of history the city came under attack and what is left today are the withering mud walls that once formed the boundaries of the city. The war-torn city of Diriyah was ground zero for the year-long clashes that took place between the Arab and the Ottoman forces.

Kingdom Center Tower

One of the more contemporary and modern locations in Riyadh would be the Kingdom Center Tower. The unique structure of the building has earned it the nickname of the “bottle opener” building. However, the unique structure is due to a deck that is shaped like a sky bridge at a height of 302 meters. That offers a mind-boggling 360-degree view of the city of Riyadh. Moreover, the base of the building serves as the Kingdom Center Mall. That houses some of the popular luxury brands in the world.

Entry Price : SAR 60 = $ 16 (for the sky bridge)

Al Masmak Fort

The particular fort in discussion is one of the most historically important sites in the city of Riyadh. The word “Masmak” translates to “strong” and according to local legends. If in a hypothetical situation the fort was to fall, so will the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The fort dates back to the 19th century and was made of clay and mud. However even to this day, no Saudi local will undermine the importance of this fort, in the recapture of the capital city of Riyadh back in 1902.

Al Faisaliyah Tower

Another modern and contemporary marvel that adorns the Saudi skyline is the Al Faisaliyah Tower. The structure is the 4th tallest structure in Riyadh standing at a height of 267 meters right after the Kingdom Center Tower. The most unique feature of this tower, however, is the golden sphere-shaped globe on top of the tower. What’s more unique is if you stand still and watch it with a little bit of focus. You would realize that the sphere is actually rotating. What is more interesting is that the sphere is actually a revolving restaurant offering a breathtaking 360° view of the city at night.

National Museum, Riyadh

It is a unique structure that is a perfect blend of the old and new. The structure houses many historic artefacts that are housed in a modern structure. While lying in the vicinity of several other historically important archaeological sites. The museum is a living embodiment of Saudi Arabia’s history and the ancient race of the people known as the Banu Hanifa. The museum brings alive the struggle, resilience and hard work of the Saudi royal family in ensuring a brighter future for their people.

Deerah Souq

The word souq literally translates to ‘A Street market’ in Arabic and this is one market in Riyadh you would not wanna miss visiting. The market lies along Thumairi Street which also often gives the market its second name ‘Al-Thumairi Souq’. The souq lies in the old part of the city close to the Masmak Fort. That ensures the rich heritage and history that one can still experience in the streets of the souq. The markets that line the street range from local handicrafts to souvenirs, gold and antique shops. The best part is that you can bargain and get the best deals for some very old antiques. Also, most of the shopkeepers know a little English making communication a little less troublesome. Making the unique souq a very tourist-friendly place.
