The literal meaning of Ubud is a medicine that comes from a Balinese word Ubad. Ubud, Indonesia's historical town was originally an important source of medicinal herbs and plants. As per the 8th-century legends, Rsi Markendya (a Javanese priest) meditated at the confluence of two auspicious Hindu rivers in the Ubud locality of Campuhan.
In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords. The lords were members of the Balinese Kshatriya caste of Suk. They were also an adamant supporter of the village's increasingly renowned arts scenes. The lords owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali's southern states.
The island developed as a tourist destination after the arrival of a Russian-born German painter, Walter Spies. He was an artist and taught painting, dance, and music. Spies along with another foreign painter, Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet used to entertain famed celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, H.G. Wells and many others which gave them good money.
The artists wanted to spread their love for art and hence they accumulated painters from all over Bali. They taught and trained Balinese in art and made Ubud the culture and art center of Bali. This eventually hipped the curiosity of art admirers from all over the globe and made it one of the prominent tourist destinations of Bali.
